Paradise - Maxime Riché
In November 2018, the mega Camp Fire ravaged the Californian town of Paradise, caused by a short-circuit on an almost century-old electricity pylon. Fueled by strong winds and dry vegetation, it became the deadliest and costliest fire in the United States. In 2020 and 2021, Paradise was again threatened by the North Complex Fire and Dixie Fire, under the same power lines. This last fire, the largest in California's history, burned an area three times the size of San Francisco.
Maxime Riché travelled to Paradise in 2020, and again in the summer of 2021, to meet those who have decided to rebuild their “paradise” in a place that now seems profoundly inhospitable. His “Paradise” series, shot with infrared film, explores the boundary between documentary and fiction, offering a parable of human adaptation in the face of adversity, blending denial, fatalism and resilience.
