For decades Wendy Ewald has collaborated with children, families, women, and teachers around the world. Her documentary investigations probe questions of identity and cultural difference. She encourages her collaborators to use cameras to record themselves, their families, communities, and to articulate their fantasies and dreams. Ewald often makes photographs herself and has them mark on her negatives, challenging who makes an image, who is the photographer, who is the subject, who is the observer and the observed. She has published fourteen books including Secret Games, a midcareer retrospective. Her latest book is The Devil Is Leaving His Cave, MACK 2022. Her work is collected by museums.
