SALLY STEIN
Dr. Sally Stein, Professor Emerita, UC Irvine, has long investigated photographic topics in relation to broader questions of culture and society. She has written extensively on the New Deal’s FSA photography- particularly work by Lange, Post Wolcott, and Delano - as well as the contested image of U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt. Along with numerous essays about popular mass media – Ladies Home Journal, Life and Look – Stein continues to study the rise of color photography in print. Stein has curated and written about the distinctive work of Ken Ohara, Melissa Shook, and Gail Rebhan; at Paris Photo 2023, Stein considers the self-portraiture of Shook and Ohara in historical context.
