MERO NAAM BIMAL HO (MY NAME IS BIMAL)

“After more than 20 years I discovered I had another name; my mother gave me this name, and she called me Bimal. After that day, I convinced myself not to use my name Dhan anymore, but rather my re-found name. In the moment I met my brothers again after so many years they called me by that way. I had a strange feeling as if the name Bimal echoed in my body, as if it had been buried for so long and now resurfaced. An epiphany in a name.

Mero Naam Bimal ho (my name is bimal) is a photographic archive project about borders and the possibilities of creating and re-found memories of my Nepalese family. What identity bonds are being created years after adoption? What relevance do these found images have today? Can they still be re-read in a contemporary way?

All this rediscovered material is juxtaposed with photographs taken during my research process. Many of my family photos were lost due to the 2015 earthquake in which the home where I was born was completely destroyed. The few recovered photos like the only photo of my mother were given to me by my brothers."
